Merit Award for Jane Melton

Jane Melton Consultant Occupational Therapist of the 2gether NHS Foundation Trust is to be presented with a Merit Award from the College of Occupational Therapists; the award recognises an individual, who in the opinion of the judging panel, has advanced the cause of and has made an exceptional impact on the profession of occupational therapy.
Jane, who was overwhelmed to receive the award said: ‘It is really lovely to have been nominated for this award by my peers and I am surprised but delighted to have won it.’ Speaking about her passion for her work Jane said, ‘Occupational therapy can give people an opportunity to regain the confidence and skill necessary to lead an independent and fulfilling life. I am extremely fortunate that in my job I can work to help people to take part in day to day activities like work, leisure and caring for themselves’
Jane's career has been firmly based in clinical practice both with people experiencing mental ill-health and people with learning disabilities. In her current consultative role Jane also has leadership responsibilities which include educating others about the importance of using activities to promote health. Alongside this Jane has developed a parallel interest in research and is currently undertaking doctoral level research studies.
Jane is dedicated to developing services which support the needs of service users. Speaking about this challellenge Jane said, ‘Modernising services to ensure that peoples day-to-day activities are achievable, interesting and health promoting is essential. It is also important to highlight the evidence base which clearly demonstrates that occupational therapy interventions aid and sustain recovery from mental ill health. I've always enjoyed being able to share my practice knowledge with colleagues and my clinical leadership role is a great opportunity to do this. I work with a fantastic team of colleagues whom I shall continue to work with to develop our occupation focused services.’

Jane will receive her Merit Award Certificate at the College of Occupational Therapists Conference on June 12
