Music Unites – Live Music Concerts at Wotton Lawn Hospital, Gloucester
31/10/2007
One of Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Foundation Trusts in-patient units, at Wotton Lawn Hospital in Gloucester, is taking part in an exciting new project called “Music Unites” to provide live music concerts for patients at the hospital.
“Music Unites” aims to explore the benefits of live music for people experiencing mental illness. This is happening across several NHS sites nationally and is co-ordinated by a charity called “Music in Hospitals”.
“Music in Hospitals” was established in 1948 and they regularly provide musical performances to hospitals and other care environments in the belief that music has a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of all involved.
Live performances by professionally trained musicians will take place once a fortnight for the next six months; the first performance took place on Friday 12th October. Service users at Wotton Lawn Hospital will be invited to complete an evaluation form about the experience.
The project is funded by the Department of Health. The aim of the project is to improve mental health care services by providing users with better access to the joy and therapeutic benefits of live music. The three-year project will see 150 concerts taking place each year in health care centres and community venues across England.
.Alan Metherall, Matron Manager, at Wotton Lawn Hospital said:“
“We are delighted to be taking part in this project. Music in Hospitals concerts not only offer therapeutic benefits but also enrich and enliven the healthcare environment for people with mental health problems. “
