Local Mental Health Trust staff join Race for Life in memory of Bob Feirn

19/06/2007

On Sunday 1st July at 11 am at Cheltenham Racecourse 26 staff from Sherborne House at the Charlton Lane Centre, part of the local mental health services, caring for older people, will be running the 5k Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of Bob Feirn, who was the Project Manager, Mental Health Services for Older People – Community.  Bob died in March this year from cancer.   Bob was very well known throughout mental health services and the wider health community.

The team are running as well for Garry Truckle who also died from cancer last year.  Other team members have suffered similar losses or know people who have had cancer but are surviving.

Sharon Feirn, Bob’s widow is part of the team at Sherborne House and Sharon is taking part in the race with her family.  The team includes nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, secretarial and admin staff.  The race is a female only one but the male members of the team will also be on hand to cheer the girls on, provide moral support and guard the picnic!

Sharon said “I am running for Robert, my husband, who died very suddenly a few weeks ago.  We had so much to look forward to.  I am running for our three sons who miss their father.  I am running for Liz and Angela, my friends who are survivors.  They remind me that there is hope and that together we can make a difference”

For most of the group this is the first time they have entered the race, or done any running, and they are preparing in a variety of ways including Tamsyn Jenkins who has been practicing in the local Caernarvon Park which is helpfully marked out in metres.
