Praise for Local Mental Health Services

03/092007

People who are supported by Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust have praised the care they get from doctors, nurses and other specialist staff such as therapists, psychologists and social workers, as part of a major national survey published today.

A total of 202 people who had used mental health services for working age adults at Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust took part in the national Mental Health Patient Survey, published by the Healthcare Commission. Nationally around 15,900 people responded to the survey.

The results for Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust show that:

Along with other areas of the country, the survey showed that people in Gloucestershire want more access to talking therapies. 88% of the people who were able to access talking therapies found them to be very helpful. Gloucestershire is leading the UK in widening access to psychological therapies for people who suffer from anxiety and depression.

Experts from the Trust have developed their own training programme to tackle the national shortage of therapists. They are teaching a wide variety of staff, from GPs and graduate mental health workers to nurses, health visitors and social workers, how to deliver the therapy. As well as training local staff, NHS trusts throughout the South West have applied for places on the courses for their staff. The Department of Health is so impressed it has cited the programme as an example of best practice to be followed across the country.

Thanking everyone who took part in the survey, Hazel Watson, Director of Nursing, Social Care and Therapies, said “The survey is an excellent way to learn from the people we support. We are pleased that a high percentage of service users rate their overall care as excellent, very good or good. Service users were particularly complimentary about the quality of Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust staff and the respect and dignity with which they were treated. We will, of course, look carefully at the results to see how we can improve standards.”

As an NHS Foundation Trust we are also very keen to involve local people in our services and welcome them as members of the Trust.
