Trust Chair unveils foundation stone of new mental health facility - Honeybourne Specialist Rehabilitation and Recovery Unit
14/01/2005
A brand new mental health specialist rehabilitation centre is being built in Cheltenham and the Chair of Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Trust, Robert Maxwell - will unveil the building's foundation stone on Monday 17 January 2005 at 2.30pm.
Work started on-site in early September 2004 and the unit, which is being built by Gloucester-based construction company E G Carter & Co Ltd, will open in summer 2005.
The new unit will provide a safe, structured and supportive environment for people who are recovering from long term mental health problems; promoting independence through, for example, the development of daily living skills and opportunities for work.
The two-storey building, with an "Excellent" NEAT (NHS Environmental Assessment Tool) assessment, has been specifically designed around the needs of patients, with a clear brief to ensure Department of Health directions on privacy and dignity.
All ten bedrooms will have private ensuite facilities. On the ground floor there will be a spacious open seating area, complete with an internet café. There will be two kitchens; one for preparing meals on a routine basis and a training kitchen where patients will make their own meals, with occupational therapy and nursing staff support. There will be a large dining room - which opens onto the garden - as well as Smoking and Non-smoking lounges. There will also be a lounge for female patients. The building is designed -through the inclusion of large windows - to maximise the use of natural light, making it feel bright and airy.
Robert Maxwell commenting on the new unit said:
"The development of Honeybourne is tremendously important for those individuals who require specialist support in their journey of recovery from mental illness and I'm delighted to be unveiling the foundation stone, thereby marking an important step in the service's development."
