MP Boost for Milsom Street Day Centre
07/10/05
Cheltenham MP, Martin Horwood will be joining staff and service users at Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Trust's Milsom Street Day Centre on Monday 10 October 2005 to celebrate World Mental Health Day.
A key part of the day's programme will be talks given by Day Centre members and ex-service users, addressing the issue of what experiencing and recovery from mental illness means to them. The day will also include an exhibition of artwork produced by Milsom Street Day Centre members.
Eve, a Milsom Street member taking part in the event, explains her reasons for wanting to raise mental health awareness:
"When a person breaks a leg, everyone can see it and sympathise and support him. If someone has a mental illness, others don't understand and tend to shy away from it. There is even, in this day and age, a stigma attached to mental illness and often people who do get depressed or anxious hide it because of that stigma. Consequently, they don't get the help they need, and there is a lot of help out there. There is no shame in being mentally ill or asking for help.
"
Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Trust is currently consulting on why it wants to become a NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust is promoting membership and asking people who want to become members to come forward.
David McGrath, Director of Social Care said:
"An important part of being an NHS Foundation Trust is that as our members, local people can have a real impact on raising mental health awareness and promoting acceptance of people who experience mental health problems.
"We are therefore delighted that Martin has accepted our invitation to join us as we use World Mental Health Day to raise awareness of mental health and recruit Foundation Trust members."
