MP Backs Mental Health Trust's Bid
05/10/05
Stroud MP David Drew has thrown his weight behind a foundation status bid for the county's mental health service.
Gloucestershire Partnership NHS Trust is currently consulting on why it wants to become a NHS Foundation Trust and is recruiting members who will play a vital role in making sure that the organisation provides services that meet the needs of county people.
Mr Drew has registered his interest in becoming a member.
An important feature of foundation trust is that local people - staff and members of the public - can become members.
The trust is now raising the profile of its membership recruitment campaign and is calling on people who may wish to find out more to come forward.
Chief Executive, Jeff James explained that Mr Drew's interest was a significant boost to the trust's campaign to spread the word about its membership drive. "We are delighted Mr Drew has submitted his application and expressed his interest in our bid for Foundation Trust status," he said.
Mr Drew said the aim of involving the community more closely in decisions about how NHS services should develop stands to benefit everyone.
"I think mental health and learning disability services are well suited to this kind of membership organisation and I am very happy to get involved as a Member of Parliament and as someone who wants to help reduce the stigma and misunderstanding often associated with mental health services," he said.
Foundation trusts members provide a link between the services that such trusts provide and the communities they serve.
2gether NHS Foundation Trust's membership recruitment campaign coincides with a period of public and staff consultation on its application ending on November 27.
